Proofreading ($10/double-spaced page)

  • The most basic form of proofreading--often referred to as plain vanilla proofreading--involves reading one draft against another to ensure that the drafts are the same. Plain vanilla proofreading restricts an editor from correcting any but the most obvious errors, such as misspellings or dropped periods. Anything more involved begins to overlap with copy editing.

Copy Editing ($20/double-spaced page)

A good copy edit will improve the readability of your document and eliminate potentially embarrassing errors without disturbing its structure. By applying commonly accepted standards of spelling, punctuation, and grammar, a copy editor will make your document more consistent in style and more professional in appearance. Even a well-written document will benefit from a thorough copy edit.

Line Editing ($30/double-spaced page)

If you think your document needs more than a copy edit but less than a rewrite, line editing is a good middle ground. Line editors review documents on a line-by-line basis for clarity, and in doing so address syntax, style, word choice, redundancy, and awkward expression. Documents undergoing a line edit are also copy edited.

Rewriting ($50--$75/hour)

For a rewrite, sentences are recast, paragraphs are tightened, sections are shifted or collapsed. In most cases, clarity is greatly improved when a document is shorter rather than longer. Writing whose hallmark is brevity speaks with more authority and better maintains the reader's interest.

Writing ($75--$100/hour)

Send us your notes, tell us what you want to say, and we'll say it . . .

Critiques ($40/page; specify page limit, if any)

If you're looking for feedback, we offer critiques of your work at the level of detail you request. Sometimes a couple of paragraphs of commentary is all you need to help focus your thoughts or reshape your ideas.
